The Newmarket Hotel
Welcome to The Newmarket Hotel
The Newmarket Hotel, nestled along Old Brighton Road in Lewes, offers travelers a genuine blend of charm, comfort, and value. With a solid rating of 3.7, it stands as a testament to what a well-run, mid-range inn can provide without the trappings of a typical hotel chain. Visitors consistently praise its clean, cozy rooms, friendly and accommodating staff, and the calm atmosphere that belies its location on the busy A27.
What truly sets The Newmarket apart is the warmth of its service. Guests like Ben Hughes and Craig B highlight the staff’s attentiveness and willingness to go above and beyond, from personalized welcomes to on-the-spot assistance with travel arrangements. The landlady’s dedication turns a simple business trip into a welcoming, homely experience. Despite the absence of a bar or restaurant at the moment, the promise of reopening amenities adds a sense of anticipation for future stays.
The hotel’s proximity to Brighton and convenient transport options—such as the bus stop right outside and free, ample parking—make it a practical base for exploring both the vibrant city and the tranquil South East countryside. Travelers who stay here often speak fondly of waking up to stunning views of rolling fields and enjoying time spent with the resident, calm dog, adding a layer of heartfelt hospitality to the stay.
While the décor may show signs of its history and a little wear, this only adds to The Newmarket’s character. Guests report restful nights undisturbed by traffic noise and praise the cleanliness and maintained facilities. It’s a place where value meets authenticity, and where travel feels less like a transaction and more like coming home.
Whether for business or leisure, and whether traveling solo, as a couple, or with pets, The Newmarket Hotel promises a grounded, welcoming stay with a touch of countryside serenity, proving it’s much more than just another stop on the A27. It holds a quiet magic that invites guests to return, time and again.

Great place, clean and safe. I believe closed down for a while as new owners have taken over, and reopened a few months ago. Saved so much money staying here as opposed to staying in Brighton or Lewes, and a huge free car park, plus a bus stop into Brighton right outside. Disappointed there was no bar or restaurant, but we saw that on Booking.com when we booked, apparently re-opening soon. If you want to save money, and don't mind having no bar, this is a great alternative.
Stayed here on business over the weekend. What a homely and friendly place. Great staff, friendly welcome. The landlady could not do enough to make my stay any better. Highly recommend The New Market Inn to anybody staying in the area. So much so that I stayed an extra night simply because I was enjoying waking up to the stunning views and marvellous breakfasts. The evening meals are fantastic too. Good honest grub with rather generous portions. Five stars all round!!
Absolutely lovely place, really convenient to get to from Brighton and totally underrated. The food and service is absolutely lovely, and you get to meet the resident dog who is adorable and very calm. All the amenities were working in perfect condition, I would definitely stay here again! Couldn't recommend more!
The new owners know how to provide an excellent service. Uber cancelled three times for a ride to the station and when I asked for a taxi he offered to take me! Rooms clean and great for a 3 star property. If you don't want a bland box hotel chain then look here. The service is seriously good.
Stayed here for 4 nights with my partner and dog, room was lovely and clean great value for money. Chris was very welcoming and accomadating, shame that the pub was not opened. Perfectly situated for going off and exploring different parts of the south east. Would definitely stay here again if we are back down that way.
Really beautiful Inn. Super clean. Staff were so accommodating. Resident dog is ace and super docile. From our room we really couldn't hear the road and the views are nice. We had a drink outside and watched the cows and horses across the field. Such great value for money and driving to Brighton was super straightforward from here. 11/10 would stay again.
Home from home. Second time we’ve stayed at this B&b. Although a little dated, lovely place to stay, and considering it is on the main road of the A27, we had a fantastic undisturbed sleep, ( couldn’t here any traffic noise whatsoever) and truly fabulous stay. Staff were absolutely fantastic, very, very accommodating, friendly and more. Service fantastic. A bit of dust on the heated towel rail but apart from that super clean. Breakfast was delicious. Heating in room needs consideration as could be quite cold once the radiator turned itself off after reaching it’s full heat, even though we turned the thermostat up full, but apart from a couple of niggly things, would most definitely stay here again.
